Professional Dance Showcases featuring The Collective and guests
The 2nd Annual Baltimore Dance Invitational

The Collective will host two Baltimore Dance Invitational Professional Dance Showcasesfeaturing artists through an adjudication process. Showcasing local talent and intriguing choreography, the performing groups for both showcases represent professional dance in Baltimore and the surrounding regions.

The Collective will present new work from choreographers Lynne Price, Sarah Joy Stallsmith, and Lauren Withhart. The Collective will also perform Concerning Proximity choreographed by Maria Bauman (MBDance/Urban Bush Women). As a part of a residency, Maria set this beautiful work on the company in preparation for this year's Invitational.

GUEST ARTISTS FOR MARCH 8TH:

DEVIATED THEATRE, Enoch Chan and Kimmie Dobbs Chan (MD)
Preview Excerpt from creature

Eleni Grove and Matina Phillips (VA)
Blue Mountain Express: The work blends contemporary dance with bluegrass music, highlighting the journey of four women venturing on a train. Presented as the first section of a full-length work, the women's journey unfolds through their individual and collective personal stories.

Junichi Fukuda with Bowen McCauley Dance (NH)
Segments: Physically driven, this contemporary work evolved from the play and experimentation of the dancers and choreographer. More choreographic study than narrative, Segments focuses on the physicality of each movement, its intention and initiation; the dancers’ bodies in motion together and what happens when they impose on one another or are forced apart; and responses to specific constructs in time and space.

Hayli Throckmorton (MD)
The Inside of a Shadow: The work uses organic movement to represent the unconscious mind.

GUEST ARTISTS FOR MARCH 9TH:

Common Ground Dance Company, Jill Vasbinder (MD)
Shall We...?: Using african, modern, and folk dance the dancers joyfully frolic their way through Darby Pack's choreography asking the question "Shall we dance, celebrate, rejoice, praise, worship, play, enjoy...? You fill in the blank!

Deep Vision Dance Company, Nicole A. Martinell (MD)
3: "3" is the number of truth and strength; “3” mediates, harmonizes, and connects; “3” is the key to divine perfection.  Exploring this sacred number reveals its connection to the integrity of existence; order is organically sustained through the underlying pulse of 3.

Full Circle Dance Company, Donna Jacobs (MD)
Ancestors Whisper (excerpt): The messages our ancestors share often come fast, furiously, and repeatedly. We must figure out how to take head.

TaMara Swank (PA)
Amore: From birth, we are in search of love and affection. The uncertainty of love causes us to question our interactions. This work explores love, loss, acceptance and rejection. At the center of all the uncertainty is a place where we feel most vulnerable, able to open their hearts.

The Collective and ClancyWorks Dance Company in Concert
Special Guests: The Community Project 2013 and MICA's Community Arts Collaborative

This concert highlights the rich history of collaboration between ClancyWorks Dance Company and The Collective as well as both companies' continuing mission to engage the community and ultimately use dance as a catalyst for social change. By returning to Theatre Project for the third consecutive season in a shared performance, both The Collective and ClancyWorks have committed to presenting new, relevant work that is both accessible and engaging. The Collective will present new work from their current season's repetoire as well as share the stage with The Community Project 2013, featuring dancers culminating a six-week rehearsal process as community members learning a modern dance work. Hosted annually by The Collective, The Community Project is an open-call, community-based workshop where participants learned choreography from a Collective choreographer in preparation for a professional performance. This year's Community Project was sponsored by Free Fall Baltimore and choreographed by Adrienne Kraus Latanishen.

The Collective will present Spectrum choreographed by Linda Garofalo, dance faculty member at Goucher College, with original music by Cuong Nguyen. Inspired by color relationships and the ZoLO playsculpture set, Spectrum is modern art in motion where the dancers partner to make sculptures and move both asymmetrically and symmetrically to create patterns of line and color. Katie Sopoci Drake of The Collective will present excerpts of I wish I was a cat, a satirical trio that playfully examines the ups and downs of day-to-day life and the longing for a more feline existence. Martha Johnston will premiere a duet featuring Kevin Truitt and Sarah Joy Stallsmith where the dancers literally and figuratively follow their head and/or heart in making movement choices. Lastly, Collective choreographer and dancer Lauren Withhart will present a solo work accompanied by Beethoven's Sonata 14 in C Sharp minor.

ClancyWorks Dance Company will present Benchmarks, an athletic modern dance work that highlights ClancyWorks' trademark of architectural partnering and working with unique sets as a metaphor for building relationships. Inspired by an interest to rejoice in the now of relationships as opposed to what could be developed in the future, or waiting until someone or something has passed to honor the relationship, Benchmarks celebrates the value of daily interactions through the physical athleticism that is known to Clancy's work.

Benchmarks was nominated for the "Outstanding Group Performance" award by Dance Metro DC in 2013 and has recently been presented at the Arts MidWest Conference in Austin TX, Pentacle's Fall Further Showcase in New York, and also in Washington DC at the Velocity DC Dance Festival.

This event will also feature some of the community based projects created as part of MICA's Community Art Collaborative (CAC) program. The CAC is an AmeriCorps national service program that places artists in yearlong residences at nonprofit organizations throughout Baltimore City. CAC members facilitate arts-based programs for children and youth that encourage skills development, leadership opportunities, critical thinking, and community engagement, all of which contribute to K-12 student achievement. The program has developed fruitful partnerships with a number of large and small nonprofit organizations in Baltimore.
