What is Open Marley Night?

Open Marley Night is a semi-annual performance hosted by The Collective.  This performance is an informal showing that gives Baltimore area dancers the opportunity to come together and share their works – both complete and in-progress.  In addition, this event also gives the audience (as well as all of the performers) a chance to ask questions, make observations, and offer perspective to the choreographers.

Information for the Performers:

Works presented can be completed pieces or works-in-progress.  Performers should keep in mind that this performance is open to the general public, so works presented should be “family friendly”.  In addition, presentations (completed works or portions of a work) should be kept to a maximum of 10 minutes.

Because this is an informal performance, we will not be holding an official tech-rehearsal.  The performance will be held in the large studio at Experimental Movement Concepts.  Dancers will have space to change/warm-up in the small studio (observation windows will be covered), but this will be a space open to all dancers – there will not be individual rooms for each company/artist.  Keep in mind that there is only one bathroom in studio, so privacy for changing will be limited.

Choreographers will have the opportunity to address the audience before your piece is performed.  You may use this time to introduce your piece, ask the audience to focus on a specific element, or you may choose to not speak at all.  Following the performance, there will be a brief discussion with the audience so that they may ask questions or give comments.  You will also have the opportunity to speak with the audience during the post-concert reception.

There will be a table set-up for fliers and additional information.  You are welcome to place any notices about upcoming performances, classes, mailing list sign-up, etc, on this table.

There is no admission cost to the performance, but we will be accepting donations from the audience to help cover the costs of the reception.  You may invite as many people as you would like to attend the performance, but we cannot guarantee the appropriateness for all ages.  Seating will include both folding chairs and large cushions on the floor – the studio usually holds about 50 audience members.

If you would like to be considered as a performer for the Open Marley Night in April, please complete the enclosed application and return to The Collective no later than April 15,2006.
